A Family Business
Melvin Barnes started roofing at a young age with his father, where he helped clean up debris while his father worked. In later years, Melvin started installing roofs by hand with his father and uncles, who taught him everything they knew about roofing. He would later start Chief Roofing Inc. in small town Hillsborough, North Carolina. He took that hands-on knowledge, a strong work ethic and determination to succeed, and has built Chief Roofing on a reputation for doing the job right, on time, every time. This has resulted in Chief Roofing becoming one of the top roofing contractors in the area, competing with many other well-known names. Today, Melvin meets with prospective clients and shares with them the ins and outs of roofing, the small things make a big difference in the life of their roofs and protection of their homes or businesses. He maintains the personal hands-on approach that his clients have come to respect and expect in their chosen roofing contractor.
Melvin’s children, Destin and Makenzie Barnes, have always had a presence in the company. Since they were children, Destin and Makenzie helped their father on and off the jobsite as well as in the office. They grew up with the company as the years have gone by. Destin attended school at Cape Fear Community College to pursue a degree in Business Administration and now serves as a Salesman and Project Manager working alongside his father. Makenzie went to college at the University of North Carolina Wilmington to get a B.S. in Environmental Sciences and studied Economics/Entrepreneurship. She now serves as the office Operations Manager.
